On Jan. 31, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released its proposal to implement the Sanitary Food Transportation Act. The proposal, the final element required by the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), includes requirements around refrigeration, vehicle cleaning, and protection of food during transport.
The proposed rule will regulate the transportation of human and animal food products to protect them from food-safety hazards during transport. The comment period opened Feb. 5. Comments on the proposal are due May 31. The FDA will also hold three public meetings with stakeholders.
The International Foodservice Distributors Association (IFDA) says it will file comments on behalf of the industry. Information on the proposal and the public meetings will be available shortly from the IFDA food safety counsel. For more details, contact IFDA government relations at (703) 532-9400.
