Chocolate-dipped potato chips have officially gone mainstream.
Frito-Lay is launching Lay’s Wavy Original Potato Chips Dipped in Milk Chocolate this holiday season. Although the chips only will be available at Target stores and only for a limited time, there's something to be said for the fact that the the country’s largest snack maker is getting behind the trend.
Company spokesman Chris Kuechenmeister told Dallas Morning News reporter Karen Robinson-Jacobs, “We saw a tremendous opportunity given the increasing popularity of chocolate-covered snacks among our target audience, millennial women. They are looking for those more indulgent, savory/sweet combinations.
“In addition, we know this combination of sweet/savory is especially appealing during the holiday season so we chose to launch the product for a limited-time starting this month.”
The chips are part of Lay’s Wavy brand, which means they’re ridged cut.
Katie Wittenburg, with Frito-Lay’s Public Relations teams, says they’re, “the perfect combination of savory and sweet... pairing America's most-loved potato chip brand with delicious milk chocolate.”
A 5-oz bag has a suggested retail price of $3.49.
Of course, Frito-Lay isn’t the first company to pair potato chips with chocolate. Chuao offers a Potato Chip bar, and so does Sanders Candy. And no doubt countless mom and pop shops and artisan candy makers have tried the combination.
With such a winning combination of sweet and salty, the only real question seems to be, what took Frito-Lay so long?
