Product Snapshot: ColorKitchen, the manufacturer of colorful plant-based alternatives to traditional food dyes and sprinkles, has announced the debut of the country’s first naturally sourced, dye-free, Red Velvet and Confetti packaged gluten-free cake mixes. The new cake mixes are also non-GMO, hydrogenated oil-free, and containing over 90 percent organic ingredients.

"Red Velvet is one of America’s top 10 all-time favorite cake flavors, but, until now there were not any natural or organic pre-packaged baking mixes of this flavor available in the baking aisle” said ColorKitchen Founder and CEO Ashley Phelps. “The modern Red Velvet flavor is made with Red Dye #40, however, the red color was originally attributed to non-dutched anthocyanin-rich cocoa. We wanted to take this flavor back to its natural roots so we created a mix that uses vegetables like beets to give it a rich red color, as opposed to using artificial dye that has become a controversial ingredient linked to hyperactivity and allergic reactions in some people,” added Phelps.

Another one of America’s top 10 cake flavors is Funfetti, which is a white cake mix that contains multi-colored sprinkles that melt into dots of bright colors in the cake. ColorKitchen’s new Confetti Baking Mix is a naturally-sourced alternative, using plant-based rainbow confetti made from ingredients such as turmeric, spirulina, and annatto as opposed to Red40, Blue Lake and other artificial colors and flavors.

Both the Red Velvet Cake Mix and the Confetti Cake Mix use organic white rice flour, organic cane sugar, and organic potato starch, as opposed to flours containing gluten.

“Our new decadent ready-to-bake cake mixes are a great option for people who don’t have time to bake from scratch and at the same time addresses the needs all kinds of people with food allergies or sensitivities, or for those that want healthier alternatives to artificial options,” added Phelps.

In addition to the new cake mixes, ColorKitchen offers a full line of plant-based coloring options, ranging from food colors and party packets to decorative sprinkles. The range of color choices allows bakers to use the dye packets as-is or combine them to create colors of their choice. These easy-to-use food colorings come in a powder form for an extended shelf-life and ease of storage and shipping. Colors refresh instantly with a few drops of water, and readily mix into frosting for cookies, cakes, cupcakes, and other treats.

The Red Velvet Gluten-Free Cake Mix and the Confetti Gluten-Free Cake Mix will retail for $11.99.
