A new snack company is opening a factory in South Florida.
Sweepy Group Products, which was incorporated in 2013, has announced plans to open a new 32,000-sq.-ft. factory in Miami Lakes, Fla.
The plant is slated to manufacture snack packs featuring breadsticks and confectionery dips starting in the second quarter of 2014.
Lou Melocchi, the company’s general manager, said the idea for the company came from the Nutella & Go snack packs, which feature breads sticks and the Nutella hazelnut spread.
The founders loved the Nutella & Go packs, but thought they were hard to find at retailers, especially at convenience stores. They also thought the concept could easily be expanded to include more flavors and they realized that there weren’t many competing products.
So, they decided to create their own version, and thus, the Sweepy Snack Pack was born.
Initially it will come in four flavors: hazelnut chocolate, white chocolate, strawberry, and dulce de leche, but they already have plans to add others to the line-up.
Melocchi says they plan to start by distributing the product in Florida, at local grocers, mini marts, gas stations, convenience stores, gift shops, fitness centers, spas, and colleges/universities. However, the long-term goal is to distribute it throughout the United States and then eventually, internationally.
Of course, having an idea for a product and making it a reality are two different things and that’s where Rich Benson comes in. He’s the food scientist for the company, and has more than 40 years of experience in the confectionery industry.
He helped develop the final product and confirmed the nutritional facts.
Sweepy Snack Pack breadsticks will be made in America, while the dips will be made with chocolate sourced from Germany and the rest of the ingredients sourced from America. Both the sticks and the dips will be made with all-natural ingredients.
The company also plans to be at the Sweets and Snacks Expo, Booth 2386.
