Seventy lose jobs at nut processing plant
Reporter Scott Jason at theMerced Sun-Starreported that John B. Sanfilippo & Son Inc. will close its packaging facility in Gustine, Calif., this month, resulting in the loss of about 70 jobs. The processing and packaging ofFisher brand nuts will be transferred to its facility in Elgin, Ill. Human resources v.p. Tom Fordonski told Jason the shutdown of its packaging operation was done to “improve efficiency.” Walnut shelling and almond butter production will continue to run at the Gustine facility. The company will also keep the packaging equipment in Gustine in case they decide to reopen that sector, the article states. The employees who lost their jobs will receive 60 days of pay and benefits while they search for new jobs.
