The Long Co. re-elects David A. Gardner, Alfred Nickles Bakery, board chairman at its annual conference in Chicago. Long Co. also awarded Butter Krust Bakery, a division of Sara Lee, with its Holsum Silver Cup annual trophy, while Klosterman Baking Co. took home the Best Bun Annual award.


Independent bakery cooperative, the Long Co., Chicago, re-elects David A. Gardner, Alfred Nickles Bakery, Navarre, Ohio, as chairman of the board. The board of directors was announced at Long Co’s annual conference, held Sept. 23 in Chicago. Also re-elected was vice chairman Howard R. Alton, Pan-O-Gold Baking Co., St. Cloud, Minn.; treasurer Raul Buso, Holsum de Puerto Rico; and director Ken Waltos of United States Bakery, Portland, Ore. H. Dean Short of Lewis Bakeries, Evansville, Ind., was elected secretary.

The bread winners and the bun winners were in their glory, as Long Co. awarded Butter Krust Bakery, Sunbury, Pa., a division of Sara Lee, its Holsum Silver Cup annual trophy. Holsum Bakery, Phoenix, a division of Flowers Foods, won the Best Premium Bread Silver Cup annual trophy. The annual winner has the highest average score of one-year’s worth of product. Holsum scored 95.77 points out of 100 in the bread category. Long Co. also presented Klosterman Baking Co., Morristown, Ohio, with its Best Premium Bun Gold Cup Annual award. Klosterman had has the highest average score of one-year’s worth of product.   

The annual winners received a traveling trophy to display in their bakery for one year. More than 70 participating wholesale bakeries sent premium bread samples to the Long Co. for scoring by a technical services staff, who rates samples for qualities such as crust thickness and color, interior grain and uniformity of cell structure, flavor, aroma and general eating qualities.
