Canada’s oldest candy company, Ganong Bros. Ltd., has selected a new president and ceo for the company. Doug Ettinger will be the first top executive hired from outside the family in the company’s 135-year history. In his past 20 years in the food industry, Ettinger has held senior positions with Coca-Cola, Nestlé and Baxter Foods. The current president and ceo for the past 31 years, David Ganong, will maintain an advisory role on the board and remain a controlling shareholder.
“We have two very capable, young members of the family but they are not sufficiently experienced and broad enough to assume the reins at this time,” said Ganong, 64, of his children Bryana and Nick who work for the company. “I hope at some point either one or both of them will be ready. But at this juncture, I don’t think I’m the right person at my age to drive the business for the next five to 10 years.”
