New snack, granola and nutritional bars offer a wide diversity of ingredients, flavors and formats.
CLIF Bar has released a new line of Organic Dark Chocolate bars in flavors like Dark Chocolate Almond Sea Salt, Dark Chocolate Cherry Almond, Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter and Dark Chocolate Pomegranate Raspberry. The bars are gluten-free and offer 3 or 4 grams of fiber per bar, with the chocolate versions bottom-enrobed with dark chocolate.
In the sports nutrition market, CLIF has centered its focus on its Builder’s Bar, a protein bar crafted with a blend of ingredients designed to promote muscle growth, with 20 grams of soy protein in the spotlight. Available flavor profiles include a Chocolate Hazelnut variety.
KIND Healthy Snacks goes a decidedly savory direction with its Strong & KIND bars in flavors like Roasted Jalapeño, Hickory Smoked, Honey Smoked BBQ, Thai Sweet Chili and Honey Mustard. Each bar has 10 grams of protein. All are non-GMO and gluten-free.
Rickland Orchards, a B&G Foods brand, has launched CLVR bars. Made with superfruits, grain, seeds and nuts, and sweetened with coconut sugar, the bars are available in three flavors: Blueberry Cranberry Chia, Strawberry Banana Quinoa and Pomegranate Mulberry Amaranth. All are gluten-free, dairy-free, low-sodium, vegan-certified and enrolled in the Non-GMO Project and Certified Gluten-Free programs.
Fiber One, a General Mills brand, recently introduced a new snack that can help satisfy calorie-counting consumers’ sweet cravings. Protein Cookies & Crème Chewy Bars combine creamy layers and cookie pieces, but only have 140 calories per 1.17-ounce bar. The bars also contain 20 percent of the daily value of fiber and 6 grams of protein.
General Mills has updated its Nature Valley products with a line of Soft-Baked Oatmeal Squares in Blueberry, Peanut Butter and Cinnamon Brown Sugar. Each features a soft, chewy texture and 100 percent whole-grain oats. Each is also complemented with a light drizzle of frosting to add indulgent appeal.
GoMacro developed Thrive, its new line of USDA-certified-organic nutrition bars, with health-conscious consumers in mind. The line comprises three flavors—Blueberry Lavendar, Curry Apricot and Ginger Lemon— which each contain 3 grams of fiber, 4 grams of protein and only 180 calories. Thrive bars are also Non-GMO Project-verified, kosher, gluten-free and vegan-certified.
Kellogg’s recently released its Special K chewy snack bars in Salted Pretzel Chocolate, Berry Medley, Salted Caramel Chocolate and Blueberry Bliss. Each bar has 100 calories to aid with portion control.
PepsiCo’s Quaker recently added a Sweet & Salty Chocolate & Salted Caramel to its Big Chewy line of bars, which are 60 percent larger than the brand’s regular Chewy granola bars. Grains in the bars include whole-grain rolled oats, crisp rice, oat cereal bits made with whole-grain oat flour, and brown rice crisps made with whole-grain brown rice flour.
Quaker also recently released Quinoa Granola Bars in Chocolate Nut Medley and Yogurt, Fruit & Nut varieties. Quinoa is the No. 1 ingredient, with other grains like oats and brown rice playing secondary roles. Other ingredients of note include coconut and sunflower seeds.
Raw Revolution has introduced a new range of bars dubbed Raw Rev Glo. The bars are available in: Mixed Nuts, Caramel & Sea Salt; Creamy Peanut Butter & Sea Salt; and Peanut Butter, Dark Chocolate & Sea Salt. They range in protein content from 10 to 15 grams, and in fiber from 10 to 14 grams. Like all Raw Revolution bars, these are certified-organic, gluten-free, non-GMO, kosher, raw (not cooked or heated) and vegan.
In 2013, Van’s Natural Foods made its first move into the center of the store, which included the launch of its Snack Bars line, available in Chocolate Chip, Cranberry Almond and Peanut Butter Chocolate. Product packaging includes a box that proclaims, “Keeping It Real!” noting that the bars have no artificial ingredients, no hydrogenated or GMO oils, and no high-fructose corn syrup. Front-of-pack messaging also notes the amount of “nutrient rich whole grains” in each bar (varies from 8–10 grams), and 4 grams of fiber per bar. Grains and seeds in the product include whole oats, peanut flour and flax seeds. Other ingredients of note include fig paste and almond butter.
That’s It Nutrition—famous for creating “two ingredient” snacks—has launched a That’s it Apple + Coconut fruit bar, the ninth flavor in the company’s line fruit bars. Other flavors include: Apple + Apricot, Apple + Banana, Apple + Blueberry, Apple + Cherry, Apple + Mango, Apple + Pear, Apple + Pineapple, Apple + Strawberry, and Apple + Coconut. They are made without any additives, preservatives, concentrates, purées, juices, added sugars, corn syrup, artificial coloring, or flavoring, and have an 18-month shelf life. The fruit bars are gluten-free, non-GMO, vegan, kosher, raw and diabetic-friendly.
The Gluten Free Bar has broken new ground with The Gluten Free Bar Bites in Coconut Cashew Crunch, Dark Chocolate Coconut, Chocolate Cherry Almond, PB&J, Blueberry Almond Crunch, and Chocolate Hazelnut. The Bar Bites are made with a “complete protein blend” that features brown rice protein, and pea protein). They’re sold in a resealable, stand-up pouch package.
CORE Foods created its CORE Meals Hearty Oatmeal To Go Bars as a true meal replacement. It’s billed as the equivalent of a full bowl of oatmeal and is made with 100 percent organic ingredients like gluten-free oats, raw nuts and unsweetened fruit. The company suggests each bar provides four hours of stable energy. Varieties have included Almond Raisin, Cashew Cacao and Walnut Banana.
