For the complete story on Golden Boy Pies, see “The classic appeal of Golden Boy.”
The lineup at Golden Boy Pies, Overland Park, KS, includes multiple types of pie, as well as cakes, tortes, coffee cakes and mini Bundt cakes. They also manufacture a wide variety of bar cookies, like brownies, blondies and lemon bars.
Instrumental figures in the success include (from left to right): Jim Patrzykont, assistant plant manager; Terry Hunt, founder and president; and Bradley Hunt (Terry’s son), plant manager.
Terry Hunt, founder and president of Golden Boy Pies, cites the company’s lemon meringue pie as one of his personal favorites—but he typically opts for sugar-free types. “Fifteen years ago, I found out that I had diabetes,” says Hunt. “And I love desserts. That’s the reason I’m in the dessert business. So I started developing some sugar-free products.” He uses aspartame as his sweetener of choice, sometimes paired with maltitol.
Golden Boy Pies generates about $3 million per year—and its area of operation has grown through the years. The company notes that they are one of the few truly regional wholesale bakeries still in operation.
The pie lineup at Golden Boy includes apple, blackberry, cherry, pineapple, peach, rhubarb, raisin and strawberry rhubarb, as well as streusel-topped French apple, blackberry, cherry and peach. Specialty pies include Key lime, pecan and pumpkin.
The mini Bundt cakes were added in 2013, instigated by a request from the executive chef at the Research Medical Center in Kansas City. Demand for the little cakes quickly increased. Now the Kansas City Convention Center regularly orders the mini Bundt cakes. Hunt had his mini Bundt pans custom-developed so he could increase the rate of production. Available types include chocolate, red velvet and carrot.
The recipe for the carrot cake at Golden Boy came from the mother of Terry Hunt, founder and owner of the bakery. Like nearly every product coming out of the facility, the carrot cake is very traditional—a classic that has not changed through the years.
The classic cheesecakes at Golden Boy compete with some of the biggest names in the bakery industry, regularly finding strong demand.
Specialty cheesecakes are also available at Golden Boy, including double fudge, turtle, lemon, brownie, caramel apple nut, strawberry, chocolate, chocolate raspberry, chocolate cherry, cappuccino, banana split, peanut butter cup and maple caramel streusel.
Golden Boy Pies takes pride in its status as an old-fashioned bakery; the team sees it as an instrumental part of the bakery’s allure. This is not a business impacted by flighty trends. Product formulas have changed very little over the years—and years down the road, expect that ship to hold course, steady as she goes.
